Anti-Caries Efficacy of Paste Products Containing CPP-ACP

Objectives: Calcium and phosphate ions are used for hydroxy/fluoro apatite formation. Some dental products contain ions to enhance reconstitution of apatite. This in vitro study was designed to evaluate remineralization potential of paste products contained Casein PhosphoPeptide-Amorphous Calcium Phosphate (CPP-ACP) and tri-calcium phosphate.
Methods: Six paste products were selected for analysis. MI Paste (MP), MI Paste Plus (MPP), MI Paste ONE (MPO), MI Paste ONE Kids (MPOK), MI Paste ONE Perio (MPOP), and Clinpro 5000 (C5000). MP, MPP, MPO, MPOK, and MPOP contained CPP-ACP, and C5000 contained tri-calcium phosphate. Calcium and phosphate ion levels were determined as surrogate measures of remineralization potential. Ten-fold water-diluted slurry was centrifuged (10,000G, 10min) and supernatant was used for bioavailable calcium and phosphate detection (colorimetric method, N=3). Data were statistically analyzed (ANOVA, Tukey’s test, p<0.01).
Results: Mean (SD) values of bioavailable ions are presented in the table. MP, MPP, MPO, and MPOK exhibited significantly higher level of calcium and phosphate. MPOP exhibited moderate level of those. C5000 showed lower level of those. Products contained CPP-ACP showed higher calcium and phosphate level than product contained tri-calcium phosphate.
Conclusions: CPP-ACP products were shown to have potential to be clinical tools in inhibition of demineralization/promote remineralization strategies to help prevent and manage caries.
