Rice terraces are cascading fields that are made in steps on mountain slopes or valleys. In Japan, these fields can be seen everywhere in the mountains and it is said that about 8% of the rice fields in Japan are such rice terraces. Noto Hakumai and Shinshu Obasute Tanada are well known and the beauty of this landscape was depicted in literary works throughout history.
